Design & Technology

KS3
Within KS3 students have 2 lessons a week and will follow a termly rotation of the following Technology subjects:

Resistant Materials - Students will be introduced to the workshops by completing a Health and Safety Module.  Students will then experience a range of design and make activities using wood, metal and plastics.  We aim to give students a wide range of experiences to help build confidence and self-esteem in the workshops.  This allows students to follow this subject to GCSE level.

Within the Textile modules students will learn a range of techniques such as Tie Die, embroidery, embellishment, painting and machining. Students will use these skills to manufacture products like hats, ties, bags and clothing.

Resistant Materials

Within Graphics students focus on solving problems through the design process and communicate ideas using a range of media. Courses such as graphics aim to inspire students' creativity and technical knowledge to produce effective and realistic design proposals. This allows students to follow this subject to GCSE level.

Food and Catering - In the technology kitchens, students will learn about Health and Safety issues when dealing with food products.  Students will complete projects which will involve designing, making, testing and evaluating food.  Students could also practice the recipes at home on willing participants!

CAD and CAM - Whilst in year 8, students will be taught how to use equipment in the Technology Department.  Computer Aided Design package, which will enable them to produce design work to an industrial recognized standard. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their designs and have them manufactured using the Laser Cutter (Computer Aided Manufacture).

Child Development

Construction Graphics Catering

KS4

All the KS3 courses are available to follow at GCSE level except for the CAD CAM which will be incorporated in all Technology subjects, which include Resistant Materials, Graphic Products plus Textile Technology Catering.  Child Development and Construction Studies are also available to study in KS4.

Various examination boards are used but the coursework element in all technologies is worth 60% of the final mark and 40% in a terminal examination. Students will have 6 lessons a fortnight in Year 10 and 6 in Year 11. Two of these will be theory lessons to back up the practical skills and project work that students undertake in the other lessons.

Comments from GCSE Technology students:
